Introduction

Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Sword Lake, is regarded as the cultural heart of Hanoi. Covering approximately 12 hectares, the lake has been known by several names throughout history, including Luc Thuy and Ta Vong. Its present name is associated with the famous legend of Emperor Le Loi returning a sacred sword to a golden turtle after defeating the Ming forces.

The lake is surrounded by mature trees, gardens and pedestrian paths, with several of Hanoi’s most recognisable landmarks nearby. Turtle Tower stands on a small island in the centre of the lake, while Ngoc Son Temple sits on an island at its northern end, connected to the shore by the distinctive red The Huc Bridge. The lake and Ngoc Son Temple complex was recognised as a Special National Monument in 2013.

Beyond its historical significance, Hoan Kiem Lake remains an important part of everyday Hanoi life. Early mornings and late afternoons are popular times for walking, exercise and Tai Chi, while the surrounding streets become a lively pedestrian space on weekends. A leisurely walk around the lake offers an easy way to experience both Hanoi’s heritage and its contemporary local atmosphere.
