Located in the East Sea, Con Co Island is distinguished by its volcanic origins, rugged shoreline and compact landscape of forested hills. Dark volcanic rocks contrast with pale coral fragments and clear blue water, creating a distinctive coastal environment. Despite its small size, the island supports a rich variety of terrestrial and marine life, including native vegetation, coral communities and diverse fish species. Its relatively isolated position has helped preserve much of its natural character.
The island’s natural attractions include coral reefs, rocky beaches, forest trails and coastal viewpoints. Its native forest features characteristic island plants such as sea almond and phong ba trees, while the surrounding waters support marine habitats that are important to local biodiversity. The lighthouse and elevated viewpoints offer broad views over the island and the surrounding sea, highlighting the relationship between its rugged terrain and maritime setting.
Con Co also carries considerable historical significance. During the Vietnam War, it served as a strategically important outpost and witnessed intense fighting associated with the defence of northern Vietnam’s coastal waters. Historical sites and memorials preserve this legacy, while the island’s fishing traditions and seafood culture reflect its continuing connection to the sea. Today, Con Co brings together ecological value, wartime heritage and a quiet island atmosphere, making it a distinctive destination along Vietnam’s central coast.
