Located along the coastal landscape north of Mui Ne, Bau Trang is distinguished by its broad expanses of pale sand and rolling dunes. The terrain was shaped over long periods by coastal and wind-driven processes, creating undulating slopes that shift with the breeze. The light-coloured sands contrast with the blue sky and surrounding vegetation, giving the area a desert-like appearance uncommon in Vietnam’s tropical landscape.
A defining feature of Bau Trang is its pair of freshwater lakes, traditionally known as Bau Ong and Bau Ba. The lakes are separated by natural sandbanks and surrounded by dunes, forming an unusual combination of water and arid terrain. Seasonal lotus flowers add patches of pink to the lake scenery, particularly during the warmer months, while grasses, shrubs and other vegetation support the local ecosystem. The landscape was recognised as a national scenic site in 2019, reflecting its natural and geographical significance.
Bau Trang is also known for outdoor experiences that make use of its expansive sandy terrain. Visitors explore the dunes on foot or through organised jeep and all-terrain vehicle excursions, while sandboarding offers another way to experience the slopes. The surrounding lakes and changing patterns of light provide a striking setting for landscape photography. Together, the dunes, freshwater habitats and seasonal flora make Bau Trang one of the most distinctive natural attractions in the coastal region of Lam Dong Province.
