The Reed Flag Hero brings one of Vietnam’s defining historical stories to the stage, following Dinh Bo Linh, the leader who overcame the Twelve Warlords Rebellion and became emperor in 968, founding the state of Dai Co Viet. The performance draws on the well-known childhood image of Dinh Bo Linh using reed flags in mock battles—a symbol of ambition, leadership and national unity.
Rather than relying on conventional theatre alone, the show combines circus arts, traditional dance, martial arts and music with large-scale staging, sound and lighting effects. Scenes move between rural life in the northern Vietnamese countryside, a period of conflict and division, and the dramatic moment of the emperor’s coronation. The result is a vivid introduction to Vietnamese history through a contemporary performance style.
The show takes place at Thuy Dinh Stage in Hoa Lu Ancient Town, where traditional-style architecture and the surrounding night-time atmosphere form part of the experience. It is designed as a cultural evening activity for visitors who want to explore more than Ninh Binh’s famous limestone scenery and boat journeys.
For an enjoyable visit, consider exploring Hoa Lu Ancient Town and its food stalls before the performance. The show can also complement a daytime itinerary to Trang An, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital or other nearby heritage attractions. As performance times and programming can change, check the official before making plans.
