Introduction

Located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, Ben Thanh Market is one of the city’s most recognisable symbols. Its distinctive façade and three-sided clock tower above the southern entrance make it a familiar landmark for visitors and a popular spot for photographs. The market stands at the intersection of several busy central streets, making it easy to include in a walking tour of the city.

The market’s history reflects Saigon’s development as a major commercial centre. Earlier markets existed in the area before the current building was constructed between 1912 and 1914. Since opening, Ben Thanh Market has remained an important place for trade and daily shopping, while becoming increasingly well known as a cultural attraction for domestic and international visitors.

Inside, rows of closely arranged stalls sell a broad range of goods, including clothing, textiles, bags, handicrafts, lacquerware, souvenirs, dried foods, spices, tea and Vietnamese coffee. The market’s different entrances lead to areas with varied merchandise, so visitors can browse for gifts, sample local products or simply observe the pace of traditional commerce.

Food is another major part of the experience. Stalls and eateries serve familiar Vietnamese dishes such as pho, bun thit nuong, spring rolls and other local specialities, alongside fresh juices and sweet treats. It is a convenient place to try several flavours in one visit, although prices and quality vary between vendors.

For a different atmosphere, explore the surrounding streets in the evening, when nearby vendors and food stalls bring renewed energy to the area. The night-market scene is less about the indoor market itself and more about the lively streetscape, casual dining and browsing for souvenirs after dark.
