Introduction

Located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, the museum is a rewarding stop for travellers interested in art, history and architecture. Its collections bring together works representing different periods and artistic traditions in Vietnam, from traditional handicrafts and religious sculpture to modern paintings that reflect the country’s changing social and cultural landscape.

The museum occupies a mansion originally commissioned by Hua Bon Hoa, a prominent Chinese-Vietnamese businessman in early-20th-century Saigon. Designed by French architect Rivera, the building was completed in 1934 and combines European architectural influences with Chinese and other Asian decorative elements. It became the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts in 1987, adding a new cultural purpose to this historic residence.

The building is an attraction in its own right. Its warm yellow façade, red-tiled roofs, arched openings and ornamental ironwork give it a distinctive historic character. Inside, patterned floor tiles, spacious corridors, decorative staircases and colourful stained-glass windows create an atmospheric setting for the collections. A particularly notable feature is the old wooden elevator enclosure, whose elaborate design reflects the craftsmanship and elegance of the mansion’s original interiors.

The museum’s galleries present a broad range of Vietnamese art. Visitors can discover lacquer paintings, silk paintings, oil paintings, sculptures and works by influential artists associated with Saigon and other regions. These pieces reveal the diversity of Vietnam’s artistic expression, from traditional techniques and local themes to modern styles shaped by changing artistic movements.

Traditional and ancient art form another important part of the collection. Ceramic objects, bronze works, wood carvings and stone sculptures illustrate the craftsmanship and cultural traditions of different periods. Artefacts associated with the Champa and Oc Eo cultures provide additional insight into the artistic and historical connections that shaped southern and central Vietnam. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, offering opportunities to encounter different artists and perspectives.

Rather than presenting art in isolation, the museum allows visitors to appreciate the relationship between artistic expression, cultural identity and historical change. The contrast between its heritage architecture and the works displayed inside makes the experience particularly engaging for travellers seeking a deeper understanding of Vietnamese culture beyond the city’s best-known landmarks.
