Introduction

The Saigon River is closely connected to the history and identity of Ho Chi Minh City. Flowing through the southern region of Vietnam before reaching the wider estuarine and coastal network, it has long served as a route for transport, trade and the movement of people and goods. Its waterways helped establish Saigon as an important port city and continue to shape the relationship between the city centre and its surrounding communities.

Along the central waterfront, the river provides a striking contrast to the city’s busy streets. Modern high-rise buildings, historic port areas and landscaped promenades line sections of the riverbank, creating a changing panorama of old and new Ho Chi Minh City. The area around Bach Dang Wharf is a convenient place to enjoy the waterfront, watch boats pass and admire views across the river.

One of the best ways to experience the Saigon River is by boat. Sightseeing cruises offer views of the central skyline from the water, while waterbus services provide a more casual way to travel along selected river routes. As the boat moves away from the busiest streets, visitors can appreciate the city’s waterfront architecture, bridges, residential areas and expanding skyline from a different angle.

The river is particularly atmospheric around sunset and after dark. As daylight fades, the skyline begins to illuminate, reflections shimmer across the water and the waterfront takes on a more relaxed character. Depending on the chosen service, visitors may enjoy a short sightseeing journey, a longer cruise or a dinner experience accompanied by live entertainment. Routes, departure points and onboard services vary, so it is advisable to check the operator’s current schedule before travelling.

Beyond sightseeing, the Saigon River has become an increasingly important part of the city’s tourism and cultural activities. The Ho Chi Minh City River Festival, for example, has featured performances and events celebrating the city’s history, waterways and cultural identity. Such initiatives reflect the river’s continuing role not only as a transport corridor but also as a public space for recreation and urban experiences.
