Introduction

Located northwest of central Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi Tunnels are among Vietnam’s most significant historical attractions. The network developed from small underground shelters into an extensive system of interconnected passages, supporting resistance forces and local communities during decades of conflict. The tunnels became an important part of wartime life, providing places to shelter, communicate, store supplies and organise military activities.

The network was excavated largely by hand using simple tools. Its design adapted to the local soil and the demands of life underground, with passages connecting different areas and concealed entrances helping protect the people inside. At its height, the wider tunnel network extended for approximately 250 kilometres, although only selected sections have been preserved and made accessible to visitors.

A visit typically begins with an introduction to the historical context, followed by demonstrations and exhibits illustrating how the tunnel system functioned. Visitors may see camouflaged entrances, ventilation openings, underground living spaces and examples of the ingenious methods used to conceal activity from above. Reconstructed or preserved areas help explain how the tunnels supported daily life under difficult conditions.

One of the most memorable experiences is entering a section of the tunnels open to the public. These passages are narrow and low, requiring visitors to crouch or move carefully through confined spaces. Some sections have been adapted for visitors, but the experience can still be physically demanding. Anyone uncomfortable with enclosed spaces or with limited mobility can explore the surface exhibits instead.

Above ground, displays and demonstrations provide further insight into wartime survival, including food preparation, supply storage and the use of camouflage. Visitors may also encounter demonstrations of wartime equipment and, where available, a separate shooting range operated under site rules and additional fees. These activities are optional and should be approached with respect for the historical context.

The visit offers a sobering perspective on the human experience of war. Rather than focusing solely on military tactics, the site illustrates the conditions endured by soldiers and civilians, the ingenuity required to survive underground and the lasting impact of conflict on local communities. Its historical significance makes it a valuable complement to museums and war-related sites in central Ho Chi Minh City.
