Introduction

Located approximately 150 km north of Ho Chi Minh City, Cat Tien National Park protects more than 71,000 hectares of tropical forests, wetlands and grasslands. It is home to a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna, including numerous rare and endangered species, making it a significant destination for biodiversity conservation in Vietnam. The park forms part of the UNESCO-recognised Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve and also preserves archaeological remains associated with the ancient Phu Nam civilisation, giving the area both ecological and historical importance.

The park offers a variety of ways to experience its natural beauty, from trekking beneath towering trees and cycling along forest trails to birdwatching and guided night wildlife excursions. One of its most notable attractions is Bau Sau (Crocodile Lake), a peaceful wetland surrounded by dense forest and recognised for its ecological value. Visitors can also learn about primate rescue and conservation at the Dao Tien Endangered Primate Species Centre, gaining insight into efforts to protect the park’s threatened wildlife.

The dry season, generally from December to April, is often the most convenient time for forest exploration, when trails are usually easier to navigate. Visitors should bring comfortable walking shoes, lightweight long-sleeved clothing and insect repellent. An overnight stay is recommended for travellers who wish to explore the park at a relaxed pace, experience its wildlife after dark and appreciate the tranquillity of Vietnam’s tropical wilderness. Cat Tien is an excellent choice for eco-conscious travellers seeking a meaningful nature escape beyond Vietnam’s bustling cities.
