Introduction

Kim Bong developed during the period when Hoi An flourished as an international trading port. Its carpentry tradition absorbed influences from different woodworking cultures while developing a distinctive local style. By the 18th century, the village had established expertise in architectural carpentry, household furniture, boatbuilding and decorative woodwork, supporting the development of Hoi An and surrounding communities.

The village is particularly known for the precision and artistry of its craftsmen. Traditional workshops produce carved wooden ornaments, furniture and architectural components, while boatbuilding and repair remain important expressions of the village’s connection to the Thu Bon River. Visitors can observe artisans at work and discover related crafts, including basket weaving and mat making, which reflect the wider tradition of rural craftsmanship.

Kim Bong’s heritage is closely linked to the preservation of Central Vietnam’s historic architecture. Local carpenters contributed to traditional houses, communal halls, pagodas and other structures in Hoi An, as well as major construction projects in Hue during the Nguyen dynasty. Recognised as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016, the village continues to preserve its woodworking knowledge while sustaining the livelihoods of local craft families.
