Introduction

Po Nagar Cham Towers developed over several centuries as an important religious centre in the ancient Cham region of Kauthara. Built on Cu Lao Hill near the mouth of the Cai River, the complex occupies a prominent position overlooking the surrounding landscape. Its surviving towers reflect the architectural achievements of the Champa civilisation, which flourished along Vietnam’s central and south-central coast and developed distinctive traditions in temple construction, sculpture and religious art.

The complex is particularly notable for its red-brick towers, carefully fitted masonry and carved decorative details. The Main Tower, dedicated to the goddess Yang Po Inư Nưgar, is the largest surviving structure and a defining example of Cham temple architecture. Other towers, sculptures and inscriptions contribute to the site’s historical and artistic significance, offering insight into the religious beliefs and craftsmanship of the Cham people.

Po Nagar remains an active place of worship, reflecting a long tradition of cultural exchange between Cham and Vietnamese communities. The goddess Po Nagar became associated with Thien Y A Na in Vietnamese Mother Goddess worship, allowing the site to retain spiritual importance across generations. The annual Po Nagar Tower Festival, held in the third lunar month, brings devotees and communities together through ceremonies and traditional practices. This continuing religious life makes the towers not only an archaeological landmark but also a living expression of the region’s cultural heritage.
