Introduction

Da Lat Cathedral was developed during the period when Da Lat was expanding as a French hill station. Construction began in 1931, and the church was inaugurated in 1942. Dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari, it became the principal cathedral of the local Catholic community and remains an important religious landmark in the city.

The cathedral follows a traditional cruciform layout and measures approximately 65 metres long and 14 metres wide, with a bell tower rising 47 metres above the ground. Its European Romanesque-inspired architecture features a symmetrical façade, rounded arches, tiled roofing and thick masonry walls. The pink exterior gives the building a distinctive appearance, while stained-glass windows introduce colour and light into the interior.

The name Chicken Church comes from the metal rooster weather vane positioned atop the bell tower, which has become one of the cathedral’s defining symbols. Beyond its religious role, the cathedral forms an important part of Da Lat’s architectural heritage and reflects the lasting influence of European design on the highland city. It is also closely associated with major Catholic celebrations, particularly Christmas, when the church and its surroundings become a focal point for the local community.
