Introduction

Located in the northern Truong Son Mountains, Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park protects an extraordinary landscape shaped by geological processes over hundreds of millions of years. Towering limestone peaks, deep valleys, sinkholes and underground waterways form one of Asia’s most remarkable karst systems. The park’s tropical forests support diverse plant and animal life, including rare and threatened species, making it significant for both geological research and biodiversity conservation.

The park is best known for its remarkable caves, each offering a different perspective on the underground landscape. Phong Nha Cave features a subterranean river and impressive chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites, while Paradise Cave is celebrated for its vast galleries and intricate limestone formations. Dark Cave combines a cave environment with river-based activities, whereas Son Doong Cave is internationally renowned for its immense scale and extraordinary underground ecosystem. Access to these attractions varies according to their conservation requirements and operating arrangements.

Beyond its caves, the national park encompasses dense forests, rivers and mountain habitats that sustain a rich variety of wildlife. The surrounding area is also home to communities, including Bru–Van Kieu and Chut ethnic groups, whose traditions and livelihoods are closely connected to the landscape. Nature exploration, river journeys and community-based cultural experiences add further depth to a destination where geological wonders, ecological significance and local heritage come together.
