Introduction

Established during Hoi An’s prosperous era as an international trading port, the Cantonese Assembly Hall served as a social and religious centre for merchants and migrants from Guangdong in southern China. Beyond providing a place for worship, it helped the Cantonese community maintain its cultural traditions, strengthen commercial relationships and preserve a sense of belonging far from their homeland. The hall remains an important part of Hoi An’s multicultural heritage, reflecting the influence of Chinese communities on the town’s historical development.

The complex features a traditional Chinese layout, with an elaborate entrance gate leading into a courtyard, followed by the main hall and worship spaces. Its decorative details include carved stonework, colourful glazed ceramics, traditional roof ornaments and intricate reliefs depicting figures and scenes from Chinese history and folklore. One of its most distinctive features is the courtyard fountain decorated with a ceramic dragon, a symbol associated with power and good fortune. The main altar honours Guan Yu, a revered historical general associated with loyalty, righteousness and integrity.

Today, the Cantonese Assembly Hall remains a place of worship as well as a significant architectural landmark within Hoi An Ancient Town. Its combination of religious traditions, community history and finely crafted decoration offers insight into the lives of the Chinese merchants who helped shape the town. Together with Hoi An’s other historic assembly halls, it illustrates the cultural diversity that developed through centuries of international trade.
