Introduction

Fujian Assembly Hall was established during Hoi An’s golden age as an international trading port, when merchants from southern China settled in the town and formed communities to support trade, maintain cultural traditions and practise their faith. Originally built on the site of a small pagoda known as Kim Son, the complex was taken over by Fujian merchants in 1697 and rebuilt with brick walls and tiled roofs in 1757. It was recognised as a national historical and cultural relic in 1990, reflecting its importance to Hoi An’s architectural and cultural heritage.

The assembly hall follows a traditional Chinese layout, with an elaborate entrance leading through a triple gate into spacious courtyards, ornamental gardens and the main sanctuary. Colourful ceramic mosaics, carved wooden details, decorative roof figures and intricate reliefs depicting mythical creatures and auspicious symbols showcase the craftsmanship of Chinese artisans. At the heart of the complex, the main altar honours Thien Hau, the sea goddess believed to protect sailors and merchants during their journeys.

Beyond its architectural beauty, Fujian Assembly Hall remains a meaningful place of worship and a symbol of the Chinese community’s lasting contribution to Hoi An. Its courtyards and sacred halls preserve traditions associated with maritime trade, community solidarity and spiritual devotion, offering a deeper understanding of the cultural exchanges that shaped this historic town.
