Introduction

Situated along the Thu Bon River, Hoi An Ancient Town developed into an important international trading port between the 15th and 19th centuries. Merchants from China, Japan and other regions traded goods and settled in the town, leaving a distinctive architectural and cultural legacy. As maritime trade gradually declined, Hoi An retained much of its historic character, preserving its traditional street plan and rows of timber-framed houses that offer a rare glimpse into the urban life of an earlier era.

The town’s architectural highlights reflect its multicultural past. The Japanese Covered Bridge, one of Hoi An’s best-known landmarks, stands alongside Chinese assembly halls, ancestral houses, temples and merchant residences with carved wooden details and tiled roofs. Historic buildings such as Tan Ky Ancient House reveal how local and international influences blended in domestic architecture, while the riverside setting and traditional market preserve the atmosphere of a historic commercial centre.

As evening falls, colourful lanterns illuminate the narrow streets and reflect across the Thu Bon River, creating one of Hoi An’s most distinctive scenes. The town is also known for its traditional handicrafts, tailor shops and regional cuisine, including Cao Lau noodles, Mi Quang and White Rose dumplings. Together, its architectural heritage, living traditions and riverside charm make Hoi An an essential cultural destination in Central Vietnam.
