Introduction

Phu Quoc Prison preserves the memory of one of the most painful chapters in the island’s history. Originally known as Coconut Tree Prison, the site was used during the French colonial period and later expanded into a large detention camp during the Vietnam War. Between 1967 and 1973, it held tens of thousands of prisoners, many of whom endured severe abuse, harsh living conditions and prolonged confinement. The site is now recognised as a Special National Historical Relic of Vietnam.

Visitors can explore the reconstructed B2 detention area, where barbed-wire fences, guard posts, cells and tiger-cage displays illustrate the prison’s strict security system and brutal conditions. The exhibition house presents historical photographs, artifacts and documentary material, while the memorial grounds honour those who died in captivity. These displays offer a sobering insight into the suffering of prisoners and their determination to resist despite extreme hardship.

A visit to Phu Quoc Prison is a meaningful opportunity to learn about Vietnam’s wartime history beyond the island’s beaches and resort areas. The experience can be combined with nearby attractions such as Ho Quoc Pagoda, Sao Beach and Khem Beach. As the site commemorates real human suffering, visitors are encouraged to explore respectfully and allow time to reflect on its historical significance.
