Introduction

Hidden within the forested limestone mountains of Phong Nha–Ke Bang, Son Doong Cave is remarkable for its extraordinary dimensions and complex geological features. Its main passage extends for more than 5 km, reaching approximately 200 metres in height and 150 metres in width at its largest sections. The immense chambers, towering rock formations and underground waterways illustrate the scale of the karst landscape formed over millions of years.

One of the cave’s most distinctive features is its dolines, where collapsed sections of the ceiling allow daylight to enter the underground chambers. These natural skylights support pockets of jungle vegetation, creating a rare environment in which forest ecosystems thrive inside a cave. Other notable features include giant stalagmites, sandy passages, an underground river and the Great Wall of Vietnam, a steep calcite formation along the expedition route. The interplay of rock, water, vegetation and sunlight gives Son Doong a landscape unlike that of most cave systems.

Son Doong is explored through a highly regulated expedition rather than conventional sightseeing. The authorised journey involves trekking through forest and rugged terrain, crossing rivers, exploring vast cave chambers and camping underground. The experience highlights both the cave’s exceptional natural scale and the importance of protecting its fragile ecosystem. As part of Phong Nha–Ke Bang’s internationally recognised karst landscape, Son Doong stands as one of Vietnam’s most significant natural wonders.
