Ta Van Village lies about 12 km southeast of Sa Pa, surrounded by the Hoang Lien Son mountains and the winding Muong Hoa Stream. Compared with the more developed Cat Cat Village, Ta Van offers a quieter and more immersive atmosphere, with traditional houses and terraced fields spread across the valley.
The village is primarily associated with the Giay community, while H’Mong and Red Dao people also live in the surrounding area. Traditional stilt houses, agricultural practices, handicrafts and local customs remain an important part of everyday life. Ta Van Giay, considered one of the oldest villages in the area, has a history of around 300 years.
Ta Van is particularly well suited to community-based tourism. Visitors can stay in traditional homestays, share meals with local families, learn about local cooking and crafts, and experience the slower rhythm of highland life. Trekking routes through the village and surrounding rice terraces also provide opportunities to interact with local communities while enjoying the scenery of Muong Hoa Valley.
The surrounding landscape changes dramatically with the agricultural seasons. March–May is known for the water-filled rice terraces, while September–October brings the golden harvest landscape. Ta Van can therefore be visited throughout the year, with the best period depending on whether travelers are seeking trekking conditions, vibrant rice fields or a quieter cultural stay.
