Introduction

Originally a marshy valley crossed by the Cam Ly Stream, the area was transformed into a lake in 1919 under French administration. Initially known as Grand Lac, the lake underwent several changes after storms damaged its early dams in 1932. A stronger stone dam was subsequently constructed in 1934–1935, forming part of the structure associated with Ong Dao Bridge today. The lake received its Vietnamese name in 1953, in honour of the celebrated poet Ho Xuan Huong.

The lake’s gently curving shoreline is framed by pine trees, lawns, flower gardens and pathways, creating a peaceful landscape within the city. Its surroundings include notable architectural and cultural landmarks, such as Thuy Ta Restaurant, Dalat Palace Hotel, Lam Vien Square and Da Lat Flower Garden. The combination of natural scenery and historic buildings reflects Da Lat’s development as a highland resort town during the early 20th century.

Xuan Huong Lake is an integral part of everyday life in Da Lat as well as a popular public gathering place. The lakeside paths are associated with walking and tandem cycling, while pedal boats provide a way to experience the water and surrounding scenery. Across the seasons, the lake’s reflections, changing light and nearby flower displays contribute to the city’s romantic character. Recognised as a national scenic site in 1988, it remains one of Da Lat’s most enduring symbols.
